For a hierarchical Video-on-Demand (VOD) system, there are two kinds of video transmissions. Videos may be transmitted from VOD Servers to VOD servers and from VOD servers to users. When a video is transmitted between VOD server and users, it must consider the problem of providing VCR function. Fast load is a good technology applied to provide VCR functions and stable connections, but its bandwidth variation complicates the problem of bandwidth allocation. This paper proposes two schemes, from long-term and short-term standpoint of view, to predict the bandwidth requirement of a VOD system with fast load. The results of the simulations demonstrate that the proposed bandwidth prediction method is very accurate. The proposed bandwidth prediction schemes can be used to further design bandwidth allocation policies.
