An XML Adapter for Non-XML-based e-Commerce Systems to Interoperate with XML-based e-Commerce Systems

Business-to-Business e-Commerce on the Internet has grown explosively for the recent several years. This growth, however, is threatened by the difficulty of interoperability among the existing e-Commerce systems that have been supported by different platforms and proprietary softwares. Although the XML-based e-Commerce systems can interoperate with each other very well, it is not easy for the XML-based systems to interoperate with the non-XML-based systems. We cannot ignore the cost that has been already invested to develop the existing systems. In this paper, we propose an XML adapter that does not need any modification of the existing non-XML-based systems. The XML adapter transforms a set of e-Commerce information from a non-XML-based system into a standard XML document and delivers it to an XML-based system, and the adapter also performs the same role for the reverse direction from an XML-based system to a non-XML-based system.
