Material Agents for Enhancement of Management Information System in Industry

Conventional database techniques have restrictions in meeting the dynamic competitive environment of the last five years, especially with the development of the web. This paper proposes the use of material agents as an alternative to the conventional material stock database approach in solving complex business problems in the manufacturing industry. An information system is designed using a combination of software engineering techniques. Fuzzy logic and artificial neural network are used for constructing a Material Usage Analysis Agent in assisting the decision of using abundant materials in stock. Production Rules are used to build a Quota Management Agent to help in effectively using existing quota in-hand for making decision. The prototype is modelled on the garment manufacturing industry in Hong Kong.
