Teaching Image Ethics in Multimedia Programs

Graphics-dependent industries such as advertising and the print and electronic media, as well as institutions which undertake in-house and on-line publishing, require computer professionals skilled in electronic image manipulation, however, employers often overlook the need for staff to apply high ethical standards in the practice of their technical skills. Computer technology allows 'seamless' alteration of photographs and other images, but these technical advances have made possible visual misrepresentation with intent to deceive, as well as difficulty in establishing copyright for original images. The challenge for educators in teaching techniques of image manipulation is to instil in students an ethical basis for their practice as computer professionals. This paper describes the image/ethics interface in a higher education multimedia program.
