FROM IP OVER ATM TO MPLS, A NEW INTERNET ARCHITECTURE

Over the last few years, the Internet has evolved into a ubiquitous network and inspired the development of a variety of new applications in business and consumer markets. These new applications have driven the demand for increased and guaranteed bandwidth requirements in the backbone of the network. In this paper, we explore some of the fundamental practical technologies in building these next generation public IP networks. We briefly overview these technologies and identify important trends. Also we survey the requirements and technologies that will form the crucial underpinnings of the emerging infrastructure. Then we study the emerging technologies for the development of scalable and cost effective IP backbone network that can handle thousands of IP traffic flows.
