Optimon-T is a software tool that has been developed to help optimise the terrestrial surveillance programme of the UK Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF) around the nuclear sites of England and Wales. The surveillance programme provides a check on both the amount and type of radionuclides being discharged and their fate in the environment. Continued surveillance of the effects of discharges on the food chain supports public confidence in the regulatory system, the safe operation of sites and the integrity of the food supply. It also allows MAFF to detect unexpected build-ups of activity and to monitor trends over time. Optimon-T carries out a complex optimisation task based on a methodology developed to represent the many interacting factors involved in deciding on the appropriate amount and type of monitoring. Details of the methodology and optimisation procedure are presented.
