Orally administered antigens usually induce immune unresponsiveness. Therefore, oral vaccination with non-viable antigens remains quite ineffective. We have recently demonstrated that if non-viable antigens are protected from the acidity and enzymatic digestion in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract these antigens become strongly immunogenic. We have discovered that when antigens are protected by acrylic coating, immune responses have been achieved both in humans and in experimental animals.
