A polysaccharidic hydrogel for controlled release: preparation and preliminary characterization

Scleroglucan, a water-soluble natural polysaccharide, is extensively used for various commerical applications (secondary oil recovery, ceramic glazes, food, paints, etc.); it was also studied for the formualtion of swellable matrices and for ophthalmic preparations~1-5. We report here the preliminary reuslts on the preparation and the behaviour of new hydrogels obtained by physical cross-linking betwene the diols group of the polymer and borate ions. Moreover, in order to better desing a drug delivery system based on the above mentioned gel, a calcualtion of its most important properties (permeability, crosslinking degree, for instance) will be performed by means of proper mathematical models.
