Targeted delivery of drugs to the colon has been focused as a useful approach either in the treatment of loal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (1), or the systemic absorption of proteins or peptides, which are degradable in the small intestine (2). We have developed a novel colon-specific drug delivery sysytem, CODES, which has a unique mechanism that lactulose acts as a trigger for a site-specific drug release at the colon (Fig.1). Several pre-clinical studies have demonstrated that CODES successfully delivers drugs to the colon after oral administration in rats and dogs (3).
