saquinavir is an HIV protease inhibitor used in the treatment of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It has a major pharmacological drawback due to its low oral bioavailability which is a result of two factors. Firstly, this drug undergoes an important first pass metabolism. Secondly, saquinavir oral absorption is limited by its poor aqueous solubility.
