In german speaking countries of western Europe spray dryer flue gas desulfurization systems (SD) are employed for 5000 MW of coal fired power plants and a maximum single plant output of about 450 MW. The oldest SD's are now operating for 8 years, enough time to collect a reasonable amount of operating experience, proving, that the SD-technology shows a satisfactory performance, if special attention is paid to the particular requests given by the coal type and a corrosion resistant construction of all parts of the plants.
