A synopsis of recent investigations of two tailless tilting wing configurations is presented. Basic aerodynamic characteristics of a generic tilting wing configuration derived from test data are discussed and compared with predicted characteristics of an innovative planform arrangement, the compound tilting wing. The compound tilting wing is unique in that it offers substantial improvements in vehicle control and performance without adding large tail surfaces traditionally associated with STOL configurations. To facilitate these investigations, an automated analytical method was developed for deflected slipstream configurations to predict trimmed flight path and control deflection estimates in the initial stages of configuration layout.
