The liquid crystal display (LCD) is rapidly becoming thetechnology of choice for high brightness, sunlight readable displays.One of the major drawbacks to this technology is the need for a highluminosity backlight. Fluorescent tubes, one of the most efficientmethods of converting electrical energy into light, poorly fit themechanical and optical requirements of LCD's. Many attempts have beenmade to address these issues by developing a light source that bettermeets the optical and mechanical requirements of LCD's. The wafer lightis a flat lamp developed specifically to meet the peculiar requirementsof avionic displays, and has demonstrated significantly improvedefficiency, uniformity, and thermal characteristics
