Numbers of pyrotechnic devices used on space vehicules have been developed and qualified mainly by tests. Although the main physical phenomena occuring in these devices have been well known for several years, part of the parameters in the models conies from know-how due to extreme conditions of use and the multidisciplinary approach required, especially thermodynamics, thermics and mechanics. Therefore, CADs were developed to modelize pyrotechnic devices and better understand complex phenomena implied during actuatin, and to optimize their functions and costs. This approach, performed by the Pyrotechnical Department of DASSAULT AVIATION, is explained in this paper to point out Us interest in designing and optimizing pyrotechnic devices. Results obtained with this approach are illustrated by actual configurations implying phenomena of various influences.
