Concrete production plants and practice: past, present and future trends

Concrete production methods and material compositions have changed radically during the last few decades. This change has partly been driven by a globally recognised crisis in concrete durability and partly by the need to justify the large investments in the infrastructure of the industrialised world by predictions of very long service lives of the structures. These new types of concrete are often described as High performance Concretes. Unfortunately, at present, available plants and construction practice do not always lead to satisfactory results. Several observations of recently constructed major civil engineering structures seem to indicate that durability cannot be reliably assured by models applied during design or by the construction technologies used. Demands on improved productivity and enhanced durability of structures represent a challenge, which the construction industry must address in the near future.
