The behaviour of masonry joints under a shear stress is fundamental to its behaviour in many situations. One factor influencing the bond strength in shear is the intrusion of mortar into the block, especially with highly porous concrete block types. A triplet test without precompression is being propsoed by CEN (Comite Europeen de Nortualisation which was drafted to support the EuroCode No.6 (EC6): Common Unified Rules for Masonry Structure) as a standard test for the determination of the bond shear strength of masonry joints The testing of triplet specimens without precompression requried careful set-up of a heavy specimen ad shearing of two joints. The positioning of load and supports also tends to introduce moments at the joints, so that they are no longer in shear loading only. In this paper, a test method is proposed which allows the determination of the bond shear strength by test on a smaller specimen with a single mortar joint.
