This paper presents the analytical and experimental studies of the rotational shock performance and actuator resonant delatch capability of a computer hard disk drive with magnetic cup latch. Higher stiffness of the latch board and stronger magnet retention force give better rotational shock performance but degrade the actuator resonant delatch capability. Optimizing the system stiffness and magnet strength is the key to meet both shock and delatch requirements. The effects of the shock pulse width on the shock performance and the numbers of resonant cycles on the delatch process are also investigated.
