One technique for correcting scientillation is to use adaptive optics, which have good resolution (several thousand actuators) and high temporal bandwidths (several hundred Hetrz). This type of correction is economically possible using liquid crystal technology. For liquid-crystal-based wavefront control to be effective in high-performance imaging systems, the device must be phase flat, highly efficient with respect to an unpolarized input, and capable of broadband modulation. This paper discusses the feasibility of using certain liquid-crystal modulators and addressing structures to achieve this type of performance.
