A HYPERSPECTRAL/MULTISPECTRAL IMAGING SYSTEM AND ITS IMAGE GEOREFERENCE

This paper describes a multi-use hyperspectral/multispectral imaging system and its image auto-georeference capacity for remote sensing/GIS applications. Integrating a portable imaging computer, a set of modular bandpass and spectral-pass imagers, a differential GPS receiver, and innovative ideas and data acquisition algorithms, the system can acquire three types of demanding spectral images. The first consists of 96 spectral bands of pushbroom scanning hyperspectral images at about 10nm bandwidth each within the 420-870nm spectral range with a swath width of 576 pixels. The second contains 48 looking angles of four configurable bands of multispectral pushbroom images with the same swath width. The third comprises a sequence of 4-band multispectral photographic framing images with a frame size of 768 by 576 pixels each at user-definable bandwidth and wavelengths anywhere within the 400-1050nm range. A software procedure, which mosaics, rotates, normalizes and geo-references the acquired airborne imagery to be GIS compatible, is developed. Test applications demonstrate that the GIS ready airborne spectral imagery is a valuable data source for regional remote sensing/GIS applications. The system is compact, lightweight, and power saving with a small remote sensor head, which can be fitted at any convenient location of an aircraft.
