Preliminary results of the hyperspectral analysis of the biophysical properties of the Carrega forest stands are presented; this area, included among the Emilia Region Parks (Northern Italy), represents one of the 21 Apennines woodland test sites, studied in the framework of the EEC project named "TRANSITALIA". The Carrega forests have been surveyed twice on September 1997 and April 1998 by the MTVIS airborne hyperspectral scanner (102 bands from VIS to TIR). The collected data sets, once calibrated, have been processed to derive spectral indexes describing biomass amount and status, liquid water content, within uniform patches of forest stands of the Park. From these areas mean spectra, from Visible to Short-Wave, have been set up to determine the different plants species and their physiological status. A Maximum Likelihood classification on Principal Components, computed to reduce the information dimensionality, has been applied to generate a thematic map describing prevailing species distribution and their phenological status.
