InternetCash: An electronic money trial service over the Internet

InternetCash, an electronic money trial service over the Internet that started in April 30, 1999, is intended to run to February 29, 2000. The service is being conducted by the Cyber Business Association in Japan with the cooperation of four InternetCash-distributing banks and more than 30 Internet stores; the association expects that about 10,000 people will be involved. InternetCash offers basic banking and payment services, including issue and shopping using InternetCash, as well as advanced services such as personal remittance via e-mail. We have developed technologies that achieve secure and reliable electronic money transactions over the Internet. The developed system implements a transaction-resuming control mechanism to ensure execution of transactions, and a prevention and verification mechanism to block the illegal use of electronic money. This paper outlines InternetCash and describes the technology developed for the trial system to achieve security and reliability.
