The IBM server group has implemented DfE attributes into their product lines. These attributes incorporate the many principles of DfE, such as design for disassembly, recyclability, modularity, the use of recycled materials and power management. Some of these DfE features involved the redesign of parts, such as operation panels to eliminate metallized paints and covers to accommodate acoustic foam attachment to eliminate adhesives. This paper discusses the methodology for implementing DfE attributes into the product design cycle, some of the details of the alternatives selected, product results and the process as implemented at supplier locations. Implementation of DfE principles within the IBM server group provides an excellent demonstration of the benefits of DfE for both the manufacturer, its suppliers and customers.
