Line-start permanent magnet (LSPM) motors have been shown to be capable of very desirable performance characteristics. They may operate with very high efficiencies and near unity power factor. As Natural Resources Canada have increased energy efficiency regulations for both electric motors and appliances which use electric motors, there is a need for practical high efficiency motors. However, investigation into their design, particularly single phase motors, has been limited. Two apparent reasons for this are increased initial motor cost and the difficulty of simulating motor performance accurately within an acceptable time frame. This paper presents the results of using a finite element eddy-current formulation to simulate motor performance. It is shown that it is possible to obtain accurate simulation results within an acceptable time frame.
