Simulation of swirling flows related to an intake stroke of a diesel engine

During the intake stroke of a diesel engine both swirl and tumble are utilized as turblence producing mechanisms. High levels of turbulenceare necessary to promote combustion within the engine cylinder. Due to the similarities in the flow, it is proposed that swirling annular jets constitute a class of flows from which certain characteristics of the intake stroke of an engine can be extracted. Jet flows are particularly appealing since experimentla data exists to which numerical simulations can be compared. In this paper KIVA-3 is used to simulate an annular jet, and coherenn flow structures are captured from three-dimensional transient simulations. Time averaged results are compared to expermental data for the same jet. A more complicated system is then simulated consisting of a cylinder with a moving piston. The intake valves ports. The goal of this study is to simulate a system that has many features of the intake stroke of a diesel engine cylinder.
