The symposium on Photoexcited States focussed fundamental studies of the singlet and triplet excited state behavior of C_(60) and larger fullerenes as well as functionalized fullerenes. Both laser flash photolysis and pulse radiolysis have been extensively employed to characterize and quantify singlet and triplet excited states. In contrast to C_(60) which exhibits a triplet quantum yield near unity, larger fullerenes such as C_(76) and C_(78) exhibit relatively low triplet yield ( PHI _f<0.1). Functionalized C_(60) such as pyrrolidino, methano, hydro and aza fullerenes exhibit usually triplet excited states characteristics comparable to the parent C_(60) with a shift to the blue of the T-T transition, a lower molar absorption coefficient and a high triplet quantum yield which can decrease drastically when the number of double bonds of the C_(60) moiety decreases or when the adduct is an electron donor particularly in polar solvents.
