A new, high sensitivity method has been developed of measuring simultaneously the mass deposited on a surface and the resulting heat flow to that surface. The method employs a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) coupled thermally to a heat conduction calorimeter (HCC), and the combination can measure mass changes to +-0.02 mu g and heat flows to +-3 mu W. The construction of the apparatus and its performance are described. Measurements on the sorption of chloroform vapor by an aliphatic polyurethane film 3 mu m thick and on the sorption of bromobenzene vapor by a C_(60) film 50 nm thick are presented.
