Studies towards the synthesis and isolation of fullerene carbon allotropes

Decomposition of the atomic carbon precursor diazotetrazole (CN_6) in the presence of [60]fullerene in benzene or toluene leads to a complex mixture of at least fourteen products. The molecular carbon allotrope C_(122) (1), was isolated in modest yield. Evidence for the structure of compound 1 derives from laser-desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry, UV-vis spectroscopy and ~(13)C NMR. LD-TOF analysis of the reaction byproducts exhibits formation of C_(119), and C_(121) as well as methanofullerene benzene and toluene adducts, C_(61)Ar.
