The first results of a large series of pulse pressure loading tests on 1 m square,stiffened plates with and without in-planerestraint, are presented here. A new test facility, recently developed to study the dynamic loading of structures and materials under controlled laboratory conditions, is introduced. The test results show that in-plane restraint is responsible for reducifng the maximum transient deflections in the stiffened plates by almost 50
