Use of an optimal control technique for history matching

Reservir histor matiching is a difficult inverse problem arising in petroleum industry. In this paper, we describe an optimal control technique, the adjoint method, and present its application to the history matching problem. Some numerical results show that the adjoint method coupled with a Quasi-Newton optimization algorithm is an efficient way to solve the history matching problem, and allows us to treat problems with large number of parameters.
