Clarifiers, lagoons, and sedimentation basins play an important role in removing suspended solids from water. This treatment is essential while drawing water/for public consumption, as well as in wastewater treatment prior to discharge to a rectiving waterbody. Although clarifiers erform a vital role in primary and secondary treatment systems and account for nearly one-third of toal treamtne system costs, design of clarifiers and sedimentation basins is based on simplistic models such as the over-flow rate concept, or solids flux model, or simply operational experience.
