Currently, the European process industries face three major problems: finding ways to operate, maintain and refurbish existing plants to maintain competitiveness and maximise long-term profitability; impriving product quality; and concerns about the safety, health and environmental (SHE) performance of older plants. These problems provided the stimulus for the ELAPSE (Extending the Life of Ageing Plants by Systematic Engineering) probject.
