Many numerical methods are available for optimising reliability, availability and maintainability on operating power plant. Very often though, their use is limited by the availability of quality, site specific data. The paper describes how a pragmatic approach to the collection and analysis of plant reliability data was developed in Nuclear Electric Ltd. The variation of historical practices witin the company's power stations needed to be taken into account and the method needed full ownership of the people who provide the data. Whilst reliability engineers were involved n this development, many other disciplines and factors, including pragmatism, also formed an important part of the approach. The approach and the way in which it has been implemented are presented in this paper.
