The effects of alloying elements on high speed steels (HSSs) and secondary precipitates in HSSs ae reviewed,and new types of HSSs and advanced sureface heat treament technologies are introduced and discussed.Particular attentions have been paid to the effects of silicon,types of secondary precipitates,laser heat treatment and physical vapor deposition,and development of low alloyed HSSs and ultra-hard HSSs developed worldwide,especially in China,The behavior of silicon and the types of seconary precipitates in HSSs have bene well understood,and many new types of HSSs have been put into production.Some advanced processes,such as laser heat rreatment and thin strip casting,are beginning to be exploited commercially.
