Shape memory behavior of a new type of Fe-Mn-Si alloy was examined by tensile tests.It was shown that the shape mempory effect (SME) is markedly improved by the addition of a suitable amount of carbon to the converntional Fe-Mn-Si shape memory alloy (SMA).It was found that the largest recovery strain corresponds to a pre-strain of 5 percent.Optical microstructure analysis showed that the pre-strain depends the amount of stress-induced #omega# martensite and its distribution,and thus influences the recovery ratio and recovery strain of the alloy.
