In this paper, four essential requirements are identified for a multimedia systems design and development environment: high level of abstraction; handlign of differnet media formats fiexibly with extensibility; verification and simulation of both functional and non-functional requirements; and the ability to use diverse existing hardware and software platform. The architecture of a design environment abstracted as a languages SDL/QSDL, is proposed. By defining media data as abstract data types and operations, functional and performance requirements can be modeled, verified and simulated. Examples are developed and analyzed to illustrate the functionality and expressiveness of the MVM. A review is also made on how MVM can meet the requirements.
