Building the interface: a comparison of three approaches to early interface development

In this paper, three methodologies, CommonKADS, FOCUS and Essential Modelling, which consider user interface requirements at the analysis stage of the system life cycle, are dexcribed. They are then compared to see what lessons can be learned with respect to interface development for knowledge-based systems. Eac happroach is examined from the following perspectives: underlying philosophy. degree of guidance for interface development, user requirments analysis, user modelling, explanation reqirements, user initiative, sequencing of activities, interface evaluation and the separation of analysis considerations from design.
