This paper describes the Connectionist-Based Information System (CBIS) computational architecture under development at the University of Otago. It provides a distirbuted software environment for the application of connectionist computations t odata sets. With this system a user can have a data set processed by various computational meodules, which appear as "drop boxes" in the CBIS graphical user interface but which amy actually reside anywhere on the Internet. The CBIS system currently offers modules for data preparation, neural network training and recall. It will soon offer fuzzy rule insertion into and extraction from neural networks, and fuzzy inferencing. An overivew of the CBIS is provided along with a description of the interaction protocols for connecting the various distributed computing modules.
