Based on the principle of heat transfer and finite element method, calculations have been carried out to study three-dimensional temperature fields of quenching processes of T8 steel. The calculations take into account comprehensively the problems of coupling of temperature fields and phase transformation, nonlinear heat treatment parameters, etc.. A try is made to calculate the problem of sudden change of surface convective conditions when workpieces are shifted from one cooling medium into another during actual quenching processes. The effect of precooling on the internal temperature gradient is preliminarily predicted. Calculated results fit measured results well.
