The opportunity to develop an efficient, economical method for control of estrus and ovulation in domesticated livestock now exists with modern, biodegradable, controlled-release systems. Previous studies have demonstrated the ability of controlled-release microsphere formulations containing a mixture of progesterone (P_4) and estradiol (E_2) to effectively control ovulation in mares. However, scaling up microsphere production to meet the demands of the domesticated livestock market is a very complicated process requiring specialized facilities and equipment which may be economically unfeasible for some veterinary products.
