There has been considerable research into the design of polymers for replacemental biomaterials due to the insufficiency of organ donors and tissues. Natural and synthetic polymers have great potential as supports for cell transplantation in view of the tissue repair and reconstruction. Essential properties of the desirable material should have biocompatibility as well as biodegradation. Mechanical strength is also strongly needed for the creation of a porous scaffold. In general, natural polymers display a more variable biocompatibility than a synthetic matrix; however, their properties are often too difficult to reproduce. If natural polymers could be controlled with certain physical or chemical proprties together with manufactured reproducibility, they would show great promise in tissue engineering.
