The CIDR-B insert~(TM) is an intravaginal insert with a surface area of 120cm~2 containing 10percent w/w progresterone (P4) in a silicone matrix (skin) moulded over a performed nylon spine (Fig. 1). Originally developed for 12d insertion periods, it has now been optimized for 7d insertion periods to meet the requirements of modern synchrony programs. This paper reports on the process by which the CIDR-B insert was optimized. The criteria which the optimized product was to meet were; a reduction in initial P4 content, reduction in residual P4 content and the deli8very of sufficient P4 such that plasma profiles were at least equivalent to the existing insert.
