It is well documented that iontophoresis can be used to enhance transdermal delivery of many drugs. Further increase in the rate of permeation may be achieved by addition of enhancers to the drug. A synergetic effect between anesthesia via iontophoresis and propylene glycol has been observed by Kushla et al.
