The avility of GnRH or its more potent analogs to stimulate LH release has led to their use for ovulation induction as an alternative non-antigenic substitute to replace hCG to hasten ovulation in preovulatory mares. This is because repeated use of hCG has been associated with decreased response and anti-hCG antibody formation. Recently, deslorein, a potent GnRH analogue, delivered via a short term release implant or via the SABER ~(TM) Delivery System, a biodegradable controlled release system has been demonstrated to consistently advance ovulation within 48 hours in estrous mares having follicles 30 to 40mm in diameter. The present studies were designed to better define the most effective formulation and dose of deslorelin using the new SABER~(TM) Delivery System for the induction of ovulation in estrus mares with follicles between 30 and 40 mm. The SABER~(TM) system is based on sucrose acetate isobutyrate (SAIB), a fully-esterified sucrose molecule. SAIB is a low molecular weight material that has many properties associated with polymeric materials. Because SAIB is a nonpolymer, dilution with small amounts of solvents can be used to give an easily-injectable solution.
