It has previously been reported how under appropriate conditions of concentration and hydration, the plant lectin concanavalin A (Con A) and specific polysaccharides can form glucose-sensitive gels. Polysucrose and dextran have been used as the polysaccharide components. Insulin delivery has been demonstrated using these systems. Such glucose-sensitive gels can form the basis of the design of a novel self-regulating drug delivery device for anti-hyperglycaemic agents and have the potential for therapeutic value in the management of diabetes.
