This paper will describe a 270 * 436 HgCdTe FPA/module that was developed for the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) H and M instruments. Raytheon Infrared Operations was selected by Officine Galileo and the Observatorie de Paris, Meudon to design, fabricate and deliver 4 flight modules for the VIRTIS H and M spectrometers. VIRTIS M, a mapping spectrometer, and VIRTIS H, a high resolution Echelle spectrometer, are payloads on the ESA ROSETTA mission. ROSETTA will be launched in 2003 to intercept the comet Wirtanen in 2011. MWIR HgCdTe on CdZnTe was chosen as the detector material due to its ability to meet the VIRTIS performance requirements while operating within the 70 K - 90 K temperature range achievable with a single-stage Stirling cooler. The cutoff wavelength of the HgCdTe detector was adjusted to approximately 5.2 μm at 70 K in order to provide high quantum efficiency from 0.9 to 5.0 μm. The HgCdTe detector array was fabricated utilizing our well-established double-layer heterojunction Liquid Phase Epitaxy (LPE) growth process. A novel and innovative vented package with a sapphire window and integral blocking or order sorting filter was designed and fabricated. During the program, qualification modules were fabricated and successfully qualified to the thermal cycle, shock, vibration and radiation environment from the ROSETTA mission profile.
