Bell Helicopter Textron is using computed Radiography (CR) system to reduce time and cost in the the x-ray inspection of critical helicopter components/parts. The increased inspection costs associated with overall x-ray inspection time (exposure and processing) and those related to chemical effluent disposal led Bell Helicopter to search for a less costly, more enivronmentally friendly radiographic inspection method. CR was selected as a viable alterantive for many typical applications because of its wide yanmic range (more material thickness visualized in one exposure), and its elimination of chemical processing and the assoicated costs of chemical effluents disposal. Following abrief description of Cr and how it functions, htis presentation focuses on the typical applications (case histories) in which CR is presently being used to reduce time and cost at Bell Helicopter.
