MANAGEMENT OF DOE-OWNED SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL

Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) owned by the US Department of Energy (DOE) is comprised of spent fuel from DOE production reactors, DOE and other government agency research reactors, US university research reactors, US nuclear-powered naval vessels, and foreign research reactors where the uranium was of US origin. Such materials include essentially intact fuel and disassembled or damaged units and pieces. In general, spent nuclear fuel generated by the operation of commercial nuclear power plants is not included, as it is under the auspices of the Department's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management for disposition. However, there are a few specific cases (e.g., TMI-2 core debris and the spent fuel from the operation of the Fort St. Vrain reactor) where formerly commercial spent fuel is included as part of the inventory of DOE-owned SNF.
