TILTROTOR FLIGHT DIRECTOR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY WITH AN EMPHASIS ON APPLICATION TO THE CV-22 OSPREY

Flight director development and design is an ongoing process within the tiltrotor community. This paper presents basic philosophy of flight director design as applied to the V-22 Osprey. Design issues and challenges that arise due to the dramatic control strategy shift within the V-22 flight envelope are addressed. The current flight directors for the US Marine Corps (MV-22) and US Air Force (CV-22) versions of the V-22 are presented with a discussion of design advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, CV-22 design applicability for mission accomplishment is discussed. Finally, future design efforts within the V-22 program are presented.
