Future ASTOVL airframes are likely to exhibit much higher levels of cross-coupling than the Harrier. It may be that multivariable design methods such as H_x may be required to exploit these airframes fully. Highly coupled airframes and multivariable controllers may bring their own issues when it comes to flight clearance. This paper looks at one particular multivariable controller developed for the DERA research Harrier, and explores what the implications may be.
