Hydrogenation involves both chemical reaction and mass transfer whereby hydrogen reduces the double and triple carbon bonds in organic molecules. This reaction occurs when hydrogen is dispersed into an organic compound in the presence of a nickel or palladium catalyst. Optimization of the hydrogenation process requires maximizing the interface between the hydrogen, the catalyst and the organic medium. From a mixing perspective, the most critical factors enabling mass transfer and the chemical reaction are the uniform dispersion and strong induction of hydrogen, the homogeneous distribution of the catalyst throughout the tank, and the transfer of heat generated from the hydrogenation process.
